AQUATICS

Thank you for choosing the YMCA Fairfax County Reston as the place for you and your children to learn to swim. The YMCA has more than 100 years of teaching water safety and swimming skills across the country and you'll notice that the YMCA has a slightly different approach to its Swim Lessons program than you may have experienced in the past. The YMCA has always focused on the entire person, not just the swimmer. Therefore, our instructors will incorporate discussions of our Character Development Program -- Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility -- into their lessons. Children will learn about personal safety, boat safety, and backyard pool safety. Children will also learn to swim in a different manner, where the focus is on individual growth and development through guided discovery.

Parent/Child Swim Lessons (ages 6-36 months)

Parent and Tot

This class is designed for kids 6 to 36 months of age. Focus will be on acclimating children to the water environment. Games using basic water movements, such as kicking and arm strokes, are incorporated into each class.

Pikes with Parents

This class is designed for children 3-5 years who may benefit from the comfort and reassurance only a parent can provide. Children will learn to move independently using a backpack.

Pre-School Swim Lessons (ages 3-5 years)

School Age Swim Lessons (ages 6-12 years)

Youth Stroke Development Lessons (ages 6-14 years)

This is a good program for children who have already completed all levels of swim lessons or would like the more involved workout of a swim team without the competitive nature. Children should be able to swim all four strokes well and will receive advanced stroke work as well as starts and turns.

Adult Swim Lessons (ages 14 years and older)

Level I

For people who have a fear of the water or have never taken a swimming lesson. Water adjustment, kicking, arm strokes, and confidence in deep water are emphasized.

Level II

For people who can swim a short distance in shallow water with their faces in the water. Emphasis is on refining basic strokes and confidence in deep water.

Stroke Clinic

For more advanced swimmers who want to improve their strokes and endurance.

Masters Swim

This class will help novice triathletes improve their swimming times through basic stroke instruction, endurance, and interval training.

YMCA Swim Team -- The Reston Water Wolves

The YMCA Swim Team philosophy may differ a bit from the teams that you are familiar with. The philosophy of the YMCA and its sports programs is not to just build the athlete, but to build the total person, in spirit, mind, and body, through the implementation of our four pillars of character: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. The YMCA also incorporates the philosophy of "everybody plays, everybody wins, and everybody has fun" into its sports programs. Swimming itself should not be just about winning, but about striving to improve individual abilities, and when it comes to meets, setting new personal best times. Our YMCA is part of the Chesapeake and Potomac Swim League (CPSL) which is a winter swim league comprised of 18 YMCA swim teams (fourteen from Maryland, three from Delaware, and one from Virginia). For more information regarding this program, please contact the Aquatics Director at (703) 318-5303.

Water Fitness

Water Fitness is a great workout that focuses on cardiovascular and muscular conditioning. With the reduced impact that water provides, there is less strain on joints in the body. Water adds resistance to your movement, which allows for even greater progress. Come and see what water fitness is all about.

Water Fitness

Water exercise is a great way to enjoy group exercise in a supportive environment. Classes incorporate cardiovascular training as well as strength conditioning.

Pre-Natal Water Workout

Physicians and fitness experts recommend water exercise during and after pregnancy. Mothers-to-be and new moms will enjoy exercising together in a supportive environment.

Low Intensity Water Workout

Workouts designed for individuals with joint disabilities (arthritis, lupus, knee replacements, etc.), multiple sclerosis, back injuries, and other individuals who require a low-aerobic water exercise program. Emphasis is on balance, range of motion, and increasing strength and endurance. Our pool is equipped with both an easy access ramp as well as a wheel chair for those who may need some assistance entering the pool.

YOUTH PROGRAMS

Gym Schedule*

Youth Sports/Fitness

The YMCA Youth Sports philosophy encourages all participants to realize that sports participation is about goal-setting and teamwork. We encourage family involvement and values such as fair play and sportsmanship in addition to learning the fundamentals of the sport. The success of the program is partially dependent on volunteers.

Indoor Soccer (ages 3-9) January-March

YMCA Indoor Soccer enables us to take the weather out of the game but leave in the fun! With no out-of-bounds, indoor soccer is a great way to improve on soccer skills -- ball trapping, kicking, passing, and especially scoring. The first half hour will be a fun practice for working on very basic soccer skills, including easy-to-follow rules of the game. The last half hour will be a game against another team. Nobody keeps score and everybody wins.

Mighty Mites (ages 3-4)

Kinder Indoor Soccer (ages 5-6)

Kicks Indoor Soccer (ages 7-9)

Basketball (ages 5-12) March-April

This team sports program is an opportunity for kids to learn the basic principles of basketball. Each week will include a 30-minute practice followed by a game. The practice will focus on skills including ball handling, passing, and shooting. The game will give the players a chance to use the new skills they have acquired and to have fun with their teammates on the court. The height of the basket is lowered for the younger players to give them more opportunities to score. Players will receive a team T-shirt and a participation award. Parent involvement is encouraged under the leadership of a volunteer coach.

Rookies (ages 5-6)

Winners (ages 7-9)

Champions (ages 10-12)

Outdoor Soccer (ages 3-6) April-June

Mighty Mite (ages 3-4)

Kinder Soccer (ages 5-6)

All personal trainers are YMCA staffers. Free consultations are available by appointment.

Wellness Services

The YMCA offers comprehensive wellness services to our members. Our services include screenings to identify your level of wellness as well as educational programs and exercise to support processes to help you achieve and maintain optimal health and reduce your health care costs. Screenings regularly provided by the YMCA Reston include:

Body Fat

Measures your body composition and determines your lean mass. Knowing your body fat ratio can help you plan your diet and exercise in order to reach your health goals.

Blood Pressure

Measures how hard your heart has to work to pump blood and oxygen through your body. High blood pressure increases the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)

Determines the number of calories your body burns at rest. This simple breath test can help you manage your weight, making your exercise routine and diet easier to establish.

Personal Profile (RMR Pro)

Combines your RMR reading with a specialized software program to establish your personalized and effective weight management goal. YMCA Reston also partners with local health agencies to provide additional screenings, which may include:

  • Bone Mass Density (BMD): Measures risk of osteoporosis.
  • Cholesterol: Measures both total and high density lipoprotein (HDL or good cholesterol).
  • Dermascan: Detects sun damage to skin.
  • Blood Glucose: Detects diabetes.
  • Flu Shots: Helps protect you from contracting the common flu.

Please contact our Wellness Director at (703) 318-5305 for information on upcoming screenings and fees.
